1976Mercedes-Benz 450 SEL 6.9

The autobahn’s velvet hammer.

Mercedes’s answer to the Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow — and a quiet rebuke to it. The 6.9 paired hydropneumatic self-levelling suspension, borrowed from Citroën, with a near-seven-litre V8 the company refused, for years, to publish a horsepower figure on. Robert De Niro drove one through Paris in Ronin. Today, fewer than a thousand exist in road-going condition. Ours is one of them.
